Davis Park GC Assistant Professional Zach Johnson repeated as Utah Section PGA Assistant Professional Champion by beating nearly 60 other Utah Section PGA Assistant Golf Professionals. Johnson again hoisted the trophy by winning this year’s event with a spectacular finish.
Johnson’s round was lackluster through the first fourteen holes where he languished at even par. He more than made up for it by playing his final four holes Birdie, Par, Eagle, Birdie! Johnson’s 68 total (-4) was just good enough to edge out a trio of 69’s from Matt Baird, Luke Martin, and Pete Stone.
The Championship course, Park Meadows CC was in perfect condition and featured great fall weather. As host PGA Professional Bobby Trunzo noted “the weather did a 180 degree turnaround from two weeks ago.” Trunzo was referring to the two days of lightening and rain that postponed the event and cut the competition from an 36 hole event to today’s 18 hole championship.
Johnson will represent the Utah Section PGA at the PGA National Car Rental Assistant Championship that will be held in late October at the PGA Courses in Port St. Lucie, FL. A playoff for the final two of three qualifying spots included Matt Baird (Riverside CC), Luke Martin (Promontory Club), and Pete Stone (Valley View GC). Pete Stone and Luke Martin won the right to go on to the PGA National Car Rental Championship Finals while Matt Baird finished as the first alternate.
