As we all know, major champions truly rise in Major Championships. The Showdown Classic Utah PGA Junior Series Major at Jeremy Ranch Golf & Country Club, the first of five Majors in the 2017 season, took place yesterday in Park City, Utah.
With not only qualifying spots to the season-ending Major Championship at Hidden Valley in August on the line, but also one Boys and one Girls qualifying spots to the Junior PGA Championship at The Country Club of St. Albans in Missouri was up for grabs yesterday at Jeremy Ranch G&CC.
Cole Ponich, UCLA Golf commit, would come out on top for the Boys qualifying spot with a -4, 68. Ponich birdied three of his first five holes to earn the win and continue his already successful 2017 season. He will join Hayden Banz who qualified for the Junior PGA Champiohship at the Utah Junior PGA Championship last week at Soldier Hollow. The Boys will play July 31-August 3 in Missouri.
Cristiana Ciasca claimed the Girls qualifying spot with a -2, 70 on a tough, yet magnificent Jeremy Ranch course. Not knowing the significance of this one-day qualifier, Ciasca was pleasantly surprised to learn she earned her spot for the Junior PGA Championship. She will join Alina Vannarath, who also qualified at Soldier Hollow last week, on July 18-21 to compete in the Junior Championship.
The top four golfers in each Boy’s division and top three in each Girl’s division will move on to Hidden Valley in August to compete for exemption into the Utah Open and first Utah Women’s Open. Full results and qualifying results can be found HERE.
A big thank you to the staff of Jeremy Ranch Golf & Country Club for putting on a major-worthy event and venue. The Major season started off on the right foot with the next one only a week away at the Wasatch Junior Major.
