The Valley View Junior Series Major Produced Two-Time Major Champions and a 65

Author: Jesse Dodson

Zach Jones, Lexi Hamel and Cooper Jones all became two-time Utah PGA Junior Series Major champions while Cameron Tucker and Libby ward claim their first Major victories Thursday at the Valley View Junior Series Major.

Dustin Volk, Pete Stone and the Valley View Golf Course staff in Layton, Utah, went above and beyond to run the third Junior Series Major of the season. In fact, it was a Valley View staff member that claimed the low score of the tournament.

Cameron Tucker, Boys 17-18, shot a 65 to finish -7 and take a five-stroke win. Starting on the back nine, Tucker had a hot start with three birdies in a row. With no blemishes on his card, he found four more birdies and took advantage of playing on his home course.

Lexi Hamel is on a role, winning her second Utah PGA Junior Series Major in a row. Coming off a win at the Wasatch PGA Junior Major last week, Hamel secured a one-stroke win over Zaria Thompson with a 78. With only one Major left before the final Major at Hidden Valley, Hamel will be tough to beat for one of the exemption spots into the first ever Utah Women’s Open at East Bay Golf Course.

The Jones brothers, Zach and Cooper, continued their dominance of the Boys 15-16 and Boys 13-14 division by winning their second Majors. Zach won his first Major last week at Wasatch and took first at Valley View with -2 70. Cooper won his first Major at The Showdown Classic at Jeremy Ranch in a playoff but didn’t need to go extra holes at Valley View carding a one-stroke win with a 75.

Speaking of playoffs, Libby Ward and McKienzie Schow both finished with an 87 and would play the 10th hole one more time to determine the Girls 15-16 Division Major champion. It was Ward that would come out on top and earn her trip to the season ending Hidden Valley Major as a champion.

The fourth Major of the season, the Glenmoor PGA Junior Major will be played on July 18th and will be the last chance to qualify for the season ending Hidden Valley PGA Junior Major. With exemptions spots for the 2017 Utah Open at Riverside Country Club and the Utah Women’s Open on the line for the Boys and Girls older divisions, it’s bound to be an exciting finish to an eventful season.
