Tommy Sharp, Golf Lab Instructor in Salt Lake City, UT celebrated the start of the 2016 golf season with a convincing win at the Nike Winter Classic. The Nike Winter Classic has become the Utah Section PGA’s major championship tee-off for each new golf season. Utah Section PGA members enjoyed ideal playing conditions with temperatures in the high 60’s. Mike Stanger of Nike Golf joked that this year’s event should be called the Nike SUMMER Classic.
The format for this championship is a Modified Stableford scoring system which works out well as our PGA members come out of winter. By design, a bad hole doesn’t count against them and good holes count for them. Sharp’s 9 birdies and 1 eagle over two rounds certainly helped him! They gave him a seven point victory over 2nd place finishers Shawn Edwards (HAFB Hubbard GC) and last year’s Omega Player of the Year winner Chris Moody (Riverside CC). David Hall from Entrada Country Club captured the Nike Classic Senior Title by making 8 birdies and 1 eagle of his own. Tom Rogers (Promontory Club) started the season off right by winning the Super-Senior title.
The Nike Winter Classic Championship formula of warm off-season golf, great sponsors, multiple pro-pro formats, and great host venues seems to be working great. This was evidenced by the field of 107 players traveling to the St. George area to play golf and enjoy the annual meeting line-up. Nike celebrated their long, seventeen year relationship with this event by bringing in US Marketing Manager Kyle Freeman and Product Line Manager Matt Plumb for a captivating education meeting Monday night in which they rolled out the technological advances in the new Nike clubs.
