Over 100 Utah Section Professionals were challenged by high winds for the first round of the Utah Section Professional National and Section Championship. Constant winds on the first day reaching gusts 50 mph or more made the traditional host-site at Toana Vista GC in Wendover, NV one tough challenge. The tough conditions continued on the final day with gusty winds and hard fast greens to challenge our toughest competitors.
Chris Moody the 2012 Utah Section Player of the Year came out on top of the challenge winning his first Utah Section Championship title and going in as the top qualifier for the PGA Professional National Championship next June. Moody’s first round even par 72 kept him in contention while his second round 67 sealed the title.
Former Section Champion, Dustin Volk returns to the PNC as our 2nd qualifier with a second round 65 that offset a bad 76 score in his first round. In third place was newly elected PGA Member Tommy Sharp who shot back to back 71’s for a 3rd place finish. There was a four way playoff for fourth place and the final PNC spot. Former Section Champion Matt Baird tied with current District 9 Director Scott Brandt, Utah Section Honorary President Jared Barnes, and Hill AFB PGA Professional Shawn Edwards. Matt Baird won the two-hole play-off and relegating the other three players to alternate positions for the upcoming PGA Professional National Championship.
Stu Nelson from Wasatch State Park GC won the SR. Utah Section Title by shooting a two under par 142. Tom Rodgers of Promontory Club defeated Ron Branca of the Country Club for the Super-Senior Title.
