The Utah Governors was played on Wednesday at Promontory Golf Club in Park City, Utah. Promontory was a great site for the event offering the Nicklaus Painted Desert Golf Course for the morning alternate shot format and the Pete Dye Course for the afternoon matches.
The Section Professionals got off to a quick start in the morning alternate shot matches. The senior teams from the PGA continued their dominance in the Governor’s Cup event. Jimmy Blair teamed with Roy Christensen to win 4 & 2 while Brad Stone and Jeff Green were victorious 3 & 2. These two points separated the teams after the morning round as the Professionals enjoyed a 5 to 3 lead during the lunch break. Captain Chris Moody teamed with Dustin Volk for a dominating 5 & 4 victory over Kirk Siddens and Josh White. Other winners during the morning matches included, Matt Baird and Shawn Edwards with a 4 & 3 win. Troy Watkins and Todd Tanner were also victorious with a 5 & 4 victory.
After a short break and lunch all players made their way to the Pete Dye Course for the singles matches and team four ball competition. The seniors teed off in the first two groups and were strong once again. The veterans set the tone for the afternoon winning five out of the possible six points in the senior afternoon matches. The early 10 to 4 advantage gave the younger Professionals plenty of momentum to dominate the 2011 matches. Moody, Volk, Edwards, Tanner, Johnson, Stone and Chipman all came out on top in their singles matches and this led to four ball victories as well.
With the Cup firmly in hand Captain Chris Moody finished things off with his first Double Eagle of his playing career. Moody hit a big drive on number eighteen and hit a towering three iron in the hole. With many challenging greens at Promontory the group wasn’t sure where the ball ended up when they arrived at the green. After a quick scan of the area the group knew it could have found the hole, sure enough it had found the bottom of the cup! Moody has been on quite the role the last couple weeks. He is coming off a big win at the Salt Lake City Open with a pair of 66’s.
A big thank you to Promontory for their hospitality and pulling out the red carpet. They went out of their way to make sure everything was handled with great service. We would also like to thank Bill Walker, Mike Branca and the UGA team for the great day that was had by all. Everyone is out to win, but the friendships and respect between the Professionals and Amateurs is very evident.
