The warnings were all over the Salt Lake Valley Monday afternoon, HIGH WIND, GUSTS 50 mph and above. This didn’t stop thirty local PGA Professionals and Apprentices from testing their skills at Hidden Valley Country Club during the Utah Section PGA Nationwide Qualifier. At times it looked like we may have a FOG delay something you might see at Torrey Pines. We quickly realized it wasn’t fog coming across the valley it was huge DUSTstorms coming across the valley. There were trees uprooted, balls rolling off greens and many other issues caused by the wind.
The elements were as tough as we have seen all year, but Chris Moody and Pete Stone managed the elements rather well. Chris Moody started his round off bogeying the first two holes, buy quickly turned things around to record the low score of the day at 70. Once Chris figured out the swirling winds he played a great back nine. Chris the 2011 Player of the Year looks forward to competing at the next level with the Nationwide touring professionals. The other spot was captured by Pete Stone who tied with his friend and fellow worker Dustin Volk at 72. Pete had to test his endurance as he birdied the first playoff hole to qualify for the final spot. Anything around par was a great score on Monday afternoon. Section President Jared Barnes had a solid round of 73 and will be listed as the second alternate.
The Nationwide event has been moved up to the last week of July this year. Chris Moody and Pete Stone will join Matt Baird winner of the 2010 Section Championship as representatives of the Utah Section. We wish them all the best of luck, make the Utah Section proud!
