The annual Utah Section PGA Pro-Assistant Championship is a fitting way to close out the year of tournament golf within the Section. Two days of Fourball at Sand Hollow and Sunbrook Golf Courses On December 3-4 provided an escape from snow storms and an outlet for some low scores.
Two teams from Davis Park Golf Course took control of the gross division from the beginning. Head Professional Brad Stone and his two Assistant Professionals Zach Johnson, 2018 Utah Section Player of the Year, and Taylor Laybourne were tied at (-9) 63 after the first round at Sand Hollow Resort.
The two teams remained close throughout round two at Sunbrook’s The Point and Woodbridge nines, but it was Stone and Johnson who would claim the victory by one stroke over Stone and Laybourne with a final-round 65, 16-under for the tournament.
“We teamed well,” said Stone. “I played pretty good the first day and he played better the second day. I just like coming down getting out of the weather seeing fellow professionals, taking my assistants and having some fun playing some golf.”
For the net division, SouthGate Head Professional Eron Deming and Assistant Professional Tyler Dalton stole the show both days. After round one Team SouthGate let with a net (-12) 60 and followed suit at SunBrook with a net (-10) 62. Craig Sarlo and Bob Wallis of Ogden Golf & Country Club took second at 19-under.
The Utah Section is very appreciative of Phil Deimling of TaylorMade and Jeff Smith of Adidas for sponsoring the event and for Adam Jasperson, head professional of Sand Hollow, and Reed McArthur, head professional of Sunbrook, for being gracious hosts.
