The Utah Section PGA headed South to St. George for its annual meetings and the Red Rock Golf Trail Winter Classic Championship. Zach Johnson won the Championship taking advantage of the modified stableford format by scoring 2 eagles and 12 birdies over the two days for a total of 95 points! Chris Moody was close behind at 93 points throwing in 2 eagles and 9 birdies of his own. The Senior Division was also decided by only a 2 point margin, Stu Nelson won with 82 points over Scott Smith who had 80. Kim Thompson posted 77 points and won the Super Senior Division title.
The Winter Classic had a new feel this year with two new sponsors coming on board. The St. George Area Convention & Tourism Office signed on as the title sponsor naming the event the Red Rock Golf Trail Winter Classic. And long time supporter of the Utah Section PGA and this event in particular, Mike Stanger, now with Under Armour, stepped up as a supporting sponsor and enhanced the event with an awesome tee gift. Thank you to these sponsors!
Many Utah Professionals made their way home with sunburns on their faces owing to the pleasant playing conditions of 70 degree weather. Green Spring Golf Course hosted the first day of this winter getaway which is team scramble. When you put four Golf Professionals on a team and let them play a scramble, the result is a ton of low scores. The team of Aaron Allred, Jacob Holt, James Hood, and Doug Roberts had the lowest of them all at 52. That’s -20! Their scorecard showed only 2 pars, 12 birdies, and 4 eagles! SunRiver Golf Club was the site of day 2 which is the First Round of the Championship and did not disappoint with its picturesque golf holes and sloped greens! Sand Hollow Resort Golf Club proved to be a superb setting for the Final Round in this years Red Rock Golf Trail Winter Classic.
Thank you to all who played, thank you to the host golf courses, and thank you to Red Rock Golf Trail and Mike Stanger!
