One year of hard work and few swing changes were just enough to give Pete Stone the 2012 Utah Section Match Play Championship! Stone defeated close friend and fellow Davis Park Golf assistant Zach Johnson 3 & 2 on a beautiful afternoon at Hill AFB Hubbard Golf Course. The beautiful weather conditions were also a turnaround from last year’s event.
In the 2011 Match Play event Pete Stone lost to Troy Watkins in the finals after a week of grueling matches in abysmally wet weather. Not liking his overall tournament performance for 2011 Stone endeavored to make a few tweaks to his golf swing. The success of these changes is evidenced by his win over Utah Player of the Year point leader Zach Johnson. The beautiful weather during the 2012 Match Play Championship seemed to signal a different ending for Stone this year. Stone’s defeat of Chris Moody in the semifinals and Joe Summerhays in the quarterfinals were also evidence of the positive changes for him this year. There were some great matches in this very competitive 2012 Utah Section Match Play Championship.

Not only were the weather conditions almost ideal but the course conditions were also ideal. Hubbard PGA General Manager Tony Angelico and Head Golf Professional Shawn Edwards along with their grounds crew had the course in top shape for the Championship. They have done an excellent job of hosting the Match Play Championship for the past two years.
Presenting Sponsor VLCM (Shaun Steel President) hosted a corporate pro-am and professional seeding on Monday prior to the first round of the Championship. His sponsor support and hosting of the pro-am was a great kickoff for this year’s championship. Terry Outzen of Titleist/FootJoy added his support to the event through some great tee gifts for the players.
