Repeating as the Utah Section’s Callaway PGA Assistants Champion is no easy task. Riverside CC Assistant Professional Chris Moody was quick to point this out as he bested Zach Johnson in a sudden death playoff. Moody lapped the field with a first round score of 66 and seemed to be on cruise control to repeat his 2010 performance as assistants’ champion. Both the beautiful Jack Nicklaus designed Painted Valley Course at Promontory Club and a hard charging Zach Johnson didn’t make it easy going for the 2010 champion.
Both Moody and Johnson tied in regulation play with a 36 hole score total of 144. Moody won the title on the first hole of sudden-death. All the playoffs were held on the challenging #18 hole at
Chris Gresh and Troy Watkins tied for third and fourth place at 3 over par, 147’s. Chris Gresh and Troy Watkins join Chris Moody, Zack Johnson in the honor of representing the Utah Section PGA at National Calloway Assistants’ Event. The 2011 Calloway PGA Assistants Championship will be held November 3-6, 2011 at the PGA’s Port St. Lucie Complex.
The Painted Valley Course at Promontory retained its reputation as one of the most challenging golf venues in the Mountain West. Course conditions were perfect and the views were spectacular. Professionals Tom Rodgers and Tommy Chipman and their staff were the perfect hosts. They certainly achieved their goal to reward our hardworking assistants with a great tournament venue and reception dinner. Another important part of the Callaway Assistants Championship is the great event sponsor Callaway Golf. Callaway Representative Jon Unger was enthusiastic with his event support. He provided tee gifts, a “ball pool”, and closest-to-the-hole prizes making the event a quality experience for Utah Section Assistant Professional.
