Hidden amongst the flurry of the 2011 Siegfried & Jensen Utah Open and a bevy of club events are some the Utah Sections’ best community golf efforts! Our continued support for Special Olympics-Utah can be seen at every hole and at every event activity of the Utah Open. PGA Members reconnect with the Special Olympics program each year as they play in the pro-am events and the Open Championship itself. Special Olympics volunteers will again be serving as marshals, ball-spotters, leader board workers; parking attendants, scoreboard runners and many other volunteer activities at our biggest event. The Utah Section PGA and Special Olympics-Utah have been a great fourball partnership for over fifteen years. The work provided by over 200 SOUT volunteers work has been a great reminder of the how the money raised by the Utah Open has benefited Special Olympics the organization and provided Special Olympics Athletes with the opportunity to serve their community. A donation of over $32,000 is budgeted for this year’s event and brings the nine year total to well over a quarter of a million dollars.
The Utah Section’s PGA 100 “Front Nine” is complete. The scores have been tallied and the first leg of this eighteen-hole match has generated over $44,000 for
A PGA 100 “Back Nine” event is scheduled for September at the scenic Sand Hollow Resort in
Larry Olson and Devin Dehlin are the Captains for both the Front Nine and Back Nine teams. Playing in both events may give them the opportunity to make a run at Todd Meyer’s individual lead. The PGA 100 “Back Nine” is scheduled for September 9th at Sand Hollow. As the Utah Section PGA’s Independent Board Member and PGA 100 Event Chair, Larry Olson has grown this event’s popularity to an all-time high. Larry and the Les Olson Company he represents like to embrace a good challenge whether it’s on the golf course or simply for a good community cause. Over and above their team(s) commitment to the PGA 100 they contributed a $1,000 additional contribution to the Front Nine tally in honor of Landon Nelson’s (Section Staff Intern) hole-in-one on the sixth hole!
Although the Utah Section Officers and Staff are strictly neutral on whom we want to win the PGA 100 Cup we are hoping for several more hole-in-ones during the “Back Nine” event at Sand Hollow Resort in September. We know that the real winners are the game of golf and Special Olympians.
