Steve Poulson scores a first at the Reid Goodliffe Utah Senior Open!

Author: N

In the eight year history of the Utah State Senior Open an amateur golfer has never won the championship- until now. Poulson paired a couple of 68’s for a two round total of 136 (8 under par) to win the championship. Poulson’s victory was no small feat. He outscored a quality field of golf professionals lead by Jimmy Blair who shot five under par for the tournament and won $1,250.00 for his first place professional finish.

Another amateur Alan Simpkins also shot under par for the event posting a two day total of 142 (-2 under par). Three amateurs Steve Borget, Rick Groendyke, and Brent Marriott scored even par totals of 144.

Although there was considerable quality play within the amateur ranks the greater focus was on the golf professionals as they competed for positions to play in the PGA of America Senior Professional National Championship. Jimmy Blair was already exempt into the event because of his finish in the 2010 PGA Senior Open. The three Utah qualifiers were: Stu Nelson (Wasatch Mtn. GC, -4, $950.00); Jeff Green ( Standsbury Park, -2, $725.00); Kim Thompson (Willow Creek CC, -2, $725.00). Brad Stone from Davis Park Golf Course was the first alternate (-1, $500.00).

The Super Senior Division was won by Professional Ron Branca (+1; $900.00). He edged out event honoree and first round leader Reid Goodliffe (+3, $700.00) with a strong second day finish.

Nearly perfect weather and course conditions added to the ever increasing popularity of this event. This is the fourth year that Toana Vista Golf Course in Wendover has hosted this event. Each year a deserving senior golf legend is honored at the event. The honoree’s name is included in the title of the event and a special honors banquet is held after the first day of play. This years’ honoree was retiring Toana Vista Golf Professional Reid Goodliffe.
