We had a great turnout for the 2011 Brigham City Open. 2011 will be remembered as the year that the amateurs came to play. Nick Drost, college golfer from Dixie State and Brighton High, hit 17 greens in regulation and made a few putts to shoot 65 to take home the title. Marlin Widdison of Tremonton followed Drost with a 67 and 5 more amateurs followed suit shooting under par. These were great scores on a golf course that was not set up with accesible pins.
The A and B flights had some great scores highlighted by Lynn Cameron who shot a 67.
The professional division had its own kind of drama. As players came in there were 4 players bunched for the title at 68; Zach Johnson, the 2010 champion from Davis Park, Shawn Edwards from the Golf Lab in SLC, Matt Baird of Riverside Country Club and Joseph Summerhays from Glen Eagle. Chris Jones also would have been able to join them, however, when he arrived late to his beginning tee he received a 2 stroke penalty which threw him out of the play off. Jeff Cliften looked to win the professional division when he got to the final hole with a one stroke lead and found the daunting par 3 finishing hole was too tough and missed the playoff completely.
On the first hole of the playoff Joseph Summerhays looked to win with a 2 foot tap in until Zach Johnson made a 40 footer for the two of them to continue to the second hole. After both of them just missed birdie on the second hole, Johnson had a wedge get away from him on the third hole and Summerhays tapped in his par for the victory.
