SR Open win sends Schneiter to SR PNC Championship!

Author: By V. Scott Whittaker

Steve Schnieter won his first Utah Senior Open title by shooting a two round total score of 139. Schneiter’s first round 68 (-4) combined with his second round 71 (-1) gave him a four stroke win over amateur Brett Sampson. Although this was Steve Schneiter’s first major championship win as a senior player he is no stranger to championship venues. He has also qualified to play in the PGA Championship to be held at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, KY later this month. This 2014 John Evans Senior Utah Open Championship win also earns Schnieter and four other Utah Section PGA professionals a spot in PGA Senior Professional National Championship to be played in Port St. Lucie, FL later in November.

Utah Section Professionals David Desantis (145, +1); Quentin Sasser (147, +3); Scott Brandt (147, +3); and Kent Abegglen (T-148, +4) will join Schnieter at the Senior PNC Championship. Abegglen earned the last qualifying spot by winning a playoff with David Hall, Brad Stone, and Kim Thompson. A swirling wind added to the Toana Vista’s difficulty on the second day.

The Super Senior Professional Division was one by Brad Stone (148, +4) in a sudden death play-off against Kim Thompson (148, +4). Brett Sampson won the Amateur Sr. Open Championship title by shooting a 1 under par 143 for both days. Allen Simkins (140, -4) won the amateur “Super Senior Division” shooting the second lowest score for the tournament, but he played from a shorter tee. The amateur First Flight winner was Danny Griffin.

The 2014 John Evans Senior Utah Open is jointly administered and hosted by the Utah Golf Association and the Utah Section PGA. A special thank you goes to our long time championship hosts and sponsors Toana Vista GC; Rainbow, Peppermill, and Montego Bay Hotels and Casinos; and the Peppermill Concert Hall. The National PGA Sponsors are the PGA/PGA Tour and Mercedes-Benz.
