The Provo Open Celebrates Golf in Utah

If the Provo Open Celebrity and Media Day event is any indication of what’s in store for the 2013 Provo Open then look for a lot of great golf and a lot of fun too! Past event Champions, Tournament Sponsors joined Utah’s Governor Gary Herbert and other local celebs met for a great day of golf at Provo’s East Bay Golf Course. Last year’s Champion and Canadian Tour regular Tony Finau joined a bevy of talented players as the “scrambled” with celebrities and sponsors for prizes on the golf course.

Perhaps the most fun of the day came when Host Professional Kean Ridd and Utah Section PGA Staff helped give a special “Block Party” welcome to over 60 boys and girls from Provo’s Boys and Girls Club. Youngsters ages 10-16 years old were treated to a clinic by Provo Open past champions. They then had the opportunity to participate in several interesting and fun golf experiences.

The Utah Section PGA gave every boy and girl their own golf club to use for the “birdie ball” challenge. The “birdie ball” short course consisted of five “birdie ball” launch pad tees shooting to five designated “birdie ball” flags and holes. The final hole launched the birdie ball at the ten by twenty foot “Golf-o-Patmos’s) open mouth.

Host Professional Kean Ridd was able to impart some basic golf skills at the “Snag Golf” putting and chipping area. After chipping to stationary targets the boys and girls enjoyed taking shot’s with their oversized clubs and tennis sized golf balls at a couple of interesting targets. Fairways Media CEO Randy Dodson and KUTV Channel 2’s Sterling Poulsen took turns as Velcro clad targets!

The Provo Open will undoubtedly provide us with great golf shots and a skilled champion by tournament’s end on Saturday. However, the fun meter reached a new level at the Celebrity/Sponsor Tee-off Event on Wednesday.
