2011 Weather Challenges High School Golfers

The oft quoted refrain that “Neither rain, snow, sleet, nor the dark of night” can keep a postal worker from delivering the mail might also apply to Utah high school golfers this year. High school girls golf teams endured the worst-ever weather year this spring and the boys 3A and 5A high school golf championships played through some of the most challenging weather conditions possible without cancellation!  However, this year also marks the fifteenth year in a row that Utah Section PGA golf professionals and staff were there to support these high school golfer’s through good weather or bad.

Local golf professionals and the Utah Section PGA Staff have helped coach, officiate, given clinics, and coordinated the State Championships for each classification for over a decade. The Utah PGA’s commitment to high school golf continues to grow each year. With the support of the local PGA, the Utah High School Activities Association has added a separate girl’s program that has almost doubled the number of high school golf teams in Utah over the past three years. The Utah Section PGA will honor over 90 young men and women at its annual All-State Honors Banquet at the end of this school year. So what’s a little bad weather when it’s the journey that counts?

Although the Boys’ 5A and 3A Golf Championships experienced tough weather conditions two days earlier 4A and 2A Championship were played in almost ideal fall conditions. Good weather or bad the biggest story of this year’s Boy’s High School Golf Championships was quality play and a great state championship golf experience.
