Utah Section PGA professionals from across the state made the trip to Alpine Country Club in Highland, Utah, to compete in the yearly Spring Pro-Pro and qualify for this year's season-long Four-Ball Championship. With 134 professionals and apprentices, making 67 teams, the Spring Pro-Pro saw yet another record-breaking field size, exceeding last year's record by one extra team.
With a field this size, comprised of the state's seasoned professionals, it's never easy or possible to say who will come out on top, but it was Ryan Rhees and Tracy Zobell who would claim the Spring Pro-Pro title with a team score of -9, 63. This Utah County Pro-Pro duo won with 8 birdies, an eagle and only one bogey. A GROSS score of 63 was good enough for the win but only by one stroke. Tanner Alder and Davis Garner finished -8, 64 for solo second and Steve Schneiter and Kury Reynolds weren't too far behind with a -7, 67 to claim third place.
The ever-popular Spring Pro-Pro title wasn't the only thing on the line at Alpine CC, qualifying and seeding for the 2017 Four-Ball Championship were to be considered and decided upon the tournament's conclusion. Rheese and Zobell safely secured their place as the number two seed behind last year's Four-Ball champions Brad Stone and Lynn Landgren, who finished T8 in this year's Pro-Pro.
Kami Terrion and Annie Fisher took first in the Women's division with a -2, 70. It was an extraordinary back-9 that provided Terrion and Fisher with the victory, carding birdies on 5 of the first 6 holes on the back side. Speaking of extraordinary, Chad Pettingill deserves the top-play of the day with a double-eagle on the par-5 6th hole at Alpine CC. Pettingill and Charles Taylor would go on to finish T8 with a -4, 68.
Following Utah PGA tradition, the tournament concluded with the annual Spring Membership Meeting. Our pros were updated on the state of game in Utah, how their contributions were making a difference and all the new-and-improved happenings of junior golf. This yearly event is the perfect venue for the Section to start the tournament-season off right.
It would be hard to ask for a better Spring-weather day, a more qualified venue and greater company to spend the day with. This event is truly a special occasion that can only happen because of it's generous sponsors. A special thanks to Charley Carlson, Terry Outzen, Bushnell, Clear Vision, Antigua Golf and Sun Mountain for making the Spring Pro-Pro what it is. And a special thanks to the Utah Section professionals who are on the front lines of Utah golf on a daily basis.
